New York DMV Adds License Points for DWI Convictions

As reported by Streetsblog NYC in the article “DWI Convictions Will Finally Mean License Points in New York State”, the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has enacted sweeping changes to its driver penalty system, introducing harsher consequences for serious violations like driving while intoxicated (DWI) and aggravated unlicensed operation.

Under the new rules, which quietly took effect earlier this month, a conviction for DWI or driving without a valid license will now result in 11 points being added to a driver’s record. That is the DMV’s threshold for recommending license suspension to a judge. These updates also extend the point accumulation period from 18 to 24 months, increasing the window for repeat violations to trigger penalties.
