2025 Drunk Driving Statistics: Sobering Facts

According to Bankrate’s 2025 report on drunk driving statistics, alcohol-impaired driving remains a devastating and persistent problem in the United States. Every day, approximately 37 people die in drunk driving crashes—equivalent to one death every 39 minutes. Over the past decade, an average of 10,850 people lost their lives annually to these preventable tragedies.

The most recent data shows troubling trends. In 2021 alone, 13,384 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, marking a 14% increase from 2020. Nearly one-third (31%) of all U.S. traffic deaths that year involved a drunk driver. The financial cost is staggering as well, with alcohol-related fatalities in 2020 alone estimated at $123.3 billion, factoring in medical expenses and the value of lives lost.
