As reported by Newsday in the article “North Hempstead OKs $140,000 settlement for slip and fall at town dock”, the Town of North Hempstead has agreed to a $140,000 settlement after Port Washington resident Michael Ford filed a lawsuit for injuries sustained at a public dock.
Ford, who previously had a knee replacement, suffered a fractured leg and a torn meniscus after slipping on a deteriorated gangway in 2019. The gangway’s anti-slip surface had worn away, creating a dangerous condition. Although the town denied liability and claimed Ford was careless, court records revealed that the town was aware of the unsafe conditions and had failed to post warning signs at that specific location—despite doing so at nearby gangways.
