As reported by WIVB News 4 in the article “Cheektowaga Town Board Receives Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Police,” a lawsuit has been filed against the Town of Cheektowaga alleging police negligence in the tragic 2022 death of Keaira Hudson. The complaint, brought on behalf of Hudson’s estate, claims that Cheektowaga Police failed to act adequately after Hudson reported severe domestic violence.
According to the suit, Hudson had reached out to police days before her death, alleging that her estranged husband, Adam Bennefield, had physically assaulted her and made threats with a knife and box cutter. She provided officers with video evidence and made clear her fear for her life. Despite this, Bennefield was only charged with misdemeanor offenses, which did not qualify for bail, and he was released on his own recognizance the next day after an arraignment.
