As explained in AllLaw’s article “Defamation Law: Legal Elements of Libel and Slander,” defamation is a type of civil lawsuit where one party seeks compensation for harm caused by another’s false statement. But unlike simply getting your feelings hurt, a successful defamation claim must meet specific legal standards and balance the right to protect one’s reputation against the principle of free speech.
At its core, defamation is about reputation—whether someone has made a false statement that damages your standing in the community. These cases are often difficult to prove, in part because reputation is intangible and because courts are cautious not to punish speech that may be protected by the First Amendment.
