As reported by Forbes in their article, “Thinking Of Not Wearing A Motorcycle Helmet? Think Again,” states with strong helmet laws experience lower motorcycle fatality rates due to head injuries. The study, conducted by the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion at Syracuse University, highlights the critical role helmet mandates play in preventing tragedies and saving lives.
Federal data shows that an average of 4,500 motorcyclists die in crashes annually, with 37% of those deaths involving head injuries. In 2019, motorcyclist fatalities reached 5,014, and in 2016, deaths surged to 5,337, marking the highest fatality rate since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began collecting data in 1975. Experts link this rise to relaxed helmet laws, with 31 states either repealing or weakening helmet requirements since the late 1970s.
