BUFFALO, N.Y. – A Buffalo city garbage truck driver who critically injured a teenager Wednesday was operating the vehicle with a suspended commercial driver’s license, according to WIVB
The 17-year-old victim remains in critical condition at Oishei Children’s Hospital after being struck when the truck backed through an intersection on Rhode Island Street at 14th Street.
Police said the 46-year-old city employee’s commercial driver’s license was suspended due to an endorsement issue. The worker, whose name has not been released, attempted to reinstate her license after the incident.
The Department of Public Works Commissioner called the reverse maneuver “unusual” for garbage trucks and said an internal investigation is examining how the license suspension went undetected.
The driver remains on unpaid leave while the Buffalo Police Department and Erie County District Attorney’s Office investigate. No charges have been filed.
